The Northern Alberta Xtreme U18 men’s baseball program was started in August 2020 under the direction of former MLB pitcher, two time Canadian Olympian, and current NAX baseball head coach Mike Johnson.
NAX student-athletes train five days a week over the course of the school year from September-August at our diamonds in Devon, and indoor training facility at 5 Tool Fieldhouse. Under the direction of Mike Johnson and hitting coach and former pro Todd Betts, our athletes receive some of the best individual and team training in Western Canada.
NAX Baseball Staff build a competitive game schedule that considers strength of competition as well as player exposure to maximize student-athlete opportunity within the game setting. These games are played against other baseball academies and minor baseball teams across B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan.
Northern Alberta Xtreme Student-Athletes are enrolled in the Black Gold School District at both John Maland High School and Riverview Middle School in Devon, Alberta. We strongly encourage all of our student-athletes to become lifelong learners; therefore, the Xtreme program under the guidance of our Director of Academics (Paula Smith) works to ensure that both the long-term and short-term academic planning for our student-athletes is properly organized. John Maland High School has also been recognized as an official SAT test writing center.
The fundamentals of a successful baseball player often start with off-ice development. At NAX our student-athletes engage in off-ice programs such as flexibility, strength training, and conditioning with Barry Butt and his Premier Strength staff, nutrition classes, culture days/team builders, and Baseball 101 classes to ensure our student-athletes possess the proper tools to ensure their success on and off the field, both while at our program and after .
